A Brief Biography

Bruce T. Halle is the founder and chairman of the nation’s largest independent tire retailer, Discount Tire Company, an 800-store, 22 state empire with over $3 billion in annual sales revenue in 2010. Forbes ranked him as the 96th wealthiest person in America, with an estimated net worth of 3.4 billion dollars in 2011.

He opened his first store in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1960 and as the sole employee he was the tire technician, accountant, sign painter, toilet cleaner and customer service representative. Bruce would go on to expand, first across Michigan, then throughout Arizona and eventually to 20 other states.

He wed his childhood sweetheart, Gerry, but didn’t meet his firstborn (Bruce, Jr.) until six months after his birth, after Halle returned from the Marine Corps, where he served for three years during the Korean War. He credits boot camp as being an influential factor in his approach to business and life.

Gerry passed away in 1989 and Bruce later wed Diane Cummings, with whom he co-founded the Bruce T. Halle Family Foundation in 2002.

Raised Catholic, Bruce is spiritual, philanthropic and charitable.

Bruce received Eastern Michigan University’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1993.
